Rodney was born and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He serves as a board member of the Hannah Ruth Foundation, a member of the Chapel Hill High Hall of Fame Committee, and a proud graduate of Chapel Hill High School class of 1977. As a student, he was involved in many activities during high school but excelled in football and was an outstanding player. After high school, he attended Winston-Salem State University and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Urban Affairs. Rodney was a Commissioned Officer in the US Army (Armor) and served with the Army Reserves Detachment Commander, Company Commander, and Assistant S3. He also served the Carrboro Police Department as a Lieutenant for over 28 years until his retirement.

Rodney turned his skill and love for football into serving as an assistant coach for 39 years as well as mentoring young men on and off the field. As an Assistant Coach, he worked at Winston-Salem State University, Virginia State, Chapel Hill High, East Chapel Hill, Riverside High, and Hillside High School. His passion to work with youth took him into the school where he enjoyed serving as a Substitute Teacher in the Durham Public School for over 20 years. He is a Trustee Coordinator at Barbee’s Chapel Harvest Word Church, and a faithful member.
